Dried Flowers 101: From our barn to your home

If you've ever wondered what happens to all those beautiful flowers after their fresh season has passed, let me introduce you to one of my favorite things: dried flowers!

Here at Garington Field Flower Co., we harvest, hang, and dry our flowers right here on the farm in our wooden barn. Our peak drying season is during the summer months when the days are hot and dry. It's the perfect time to preserve all those beautiful blooms for another day.

One of my favorite things about dried flowers is that they allow us to enjoy flowers from each season long after they've finished blooming. They're also a wonderful way to minimize waste here on the farm. Rather than letting every last bloom go unused, we can preserve so much of that beauty for you to enjoy in your home.

And one more thing worth mentioning: our dried flowers are not bleached or chemically treated. What you see is what nature gave us!

Caring for Your Dried Flowers

The best part about dried flowers? They're incredibly easy to care for. No water, no trimming, and no flower food required!

Once you bring your dried flowers home, simply display them however you like. Keep them together in one big bunch or bouquet, or break them up and scatter them throughout your home in little bud vases. There really is no wrong way to enjoy them.

A few simple tips will help keep your dried flowers looking their best:

  • Avoid direct sunlight. If you want to preserve those beautiful, saturated colors, keep your dried flowers out of direct sunlight. Over time, sunlight can cause them to fade.

  • Keep them dry. Unlike fresh flowers, dried flowers don't need water! Keep them away from damp or humid areas to help prevent moisture damage.

  • Dust gently. If your flowers start collecting a little dust, use a hair dryer on its lowest speed and a cool or low-heat setting to gently blow it away. Hold it a little distance from the flowers so you don't damage the delicate petals.

With just a little care, your dried flowers can last a surprisingly long time — sometimes up to TWO YEARS!

What to Do When They're Ready to Go

Eventually, even dried flowers have run their course. When that time comes, don't feel bad about saying goodbye!

You can toss them into your compost pile and let them return to the soil, or simply throw them out in the yard for the mower to take care of. ;) Either way, we're all about letting things go back to the earth.

Saving Your Seasonal & Holiday Decor

Did you purchase a dried bouquet or wreath specifically for a certain holiday or season? Good news! You don't have to start from scratch next year.

When you're ready to pack it away, carefully place your dried flowers in a cardboard box and store them in a dark, dry location, such as an attic or closet. Keeping them out of direct sunlight and away from moisture will help preserve their color and shape until it's time to bring them back out again.

A little care now means you can enjoy that favorite seasonal arrangement year after year.

A Few Final Thoughts

Fresh flowers are wonderful, but there's something special about dried flowers, too. They're a little reminder that every season has its own beauty, and sometimes we can hold onto a little piece of it just a bit longer.

Thanks for bringing a little piece of Garington Field into your home!
